Guitariste, compositeur et chanteur d’une grande finesse, il est membre de Fairport Convention de 1967 à 1969 avant de former Matthews Southern Comfort. Il se lance ensuite dans une carrière solo et, en parallèle, engendre les groupes Plainsong, Hi-Fi , No Grey Faith et More Than A Song… Immigré aux USA en 1972, Le folk britannique de Iain Matthews évolue peu à peu vers des sonorités acoustiques. californiennes. En 1989, il modifie l'orthographe de son prénom Ian, en Iain. Au cours d'une carrière de plus de 50 ans, il participe à plus de 100 albums. En 2018, il publie une autobiographie Thro' My Eyes, sur sa vie dans l'industrie musicale.
